Frequently Asked Questions about Colon Hydrotherapy
What is it and how can I benefit from it?
Colon Hydrothrerapy is a safe, therapeutic treatment used to promote optimal health throughout the entire body. This gentle internal bath helps to reduce gas, bloating and toxic build up in the colon (large intestine). A cleansed colon will not only improve the function of the digestive tract, but also provide enhanced health to other areas of the body. Major organ systems such as the skin, lungs, liver and kidneys can all benefit from this treatment. Also, the immune system becomes revitalized, creating increased energy levels and rejuvenating well-being.
Will the treatment be uncomfortable?
Our therapists have created a safe tranquil environment to ensure that your colon hydrotherapy experience is both comfortable and effective. Your therapist will be taking you through the process gently to help minimize any moments of discomfort. Some patients may experience waves up minor cramping just before or during the releases of gas and stool. Patient's generally experience a sense of calm and relief after any waves of discomfort.
I want to try colonics for the first time. I have heard that having a single treatment generally will not complete the process or offer the optimal results that I am after. Can you explain this?
After providing this service for more than 20 years, I am thoroughly convinced that it is in ones best interest to complete a “series” of treatments right from the start. The colon is a long and accordion-like structure up to 5-7 feet in length with three different sections. This requires more than one session to fully hydrate and clear out.
*At our clinic we do offer special prepaid series pricing
What is a “series” of colonics and why does a series of treatments yield the best results?
A “series” is a grouping of colonic treatments booked close together in order to do a complete cleansing of the bowel or detoxification protocol. This therapy requires a cumulative approach, each session builds on the one prior. The treatments are booked close together so that the bowel can remain more hydrated to soften material that may be dehydrated and stuck. With repetition the body generally becomes more relaxed and able to “let go” with each successive treatment, this is also due to the positive effects colon hydrotherapy can have on the nervous system. Often times patients' may experience healing on various levels.
After your initial series, it is up to you and your therapist to determine what will be an appropriate after care plan for you. This is very individual and depends on a number of factors including lifestyle, diet, medications, and your body’s own ability to maintain your results. We always do our best to offer you tips and tools to implement on your own to maintain lasting results.
Are colonics addictive or do they cause dependency ?
No, the goal is to achieve the opposite; a healthy functioning colon, so that you can enjoy life and good health. Colonics are used to rehabilitate the smooth muscle tissue of the bowel, hence the term colon hydro”therapy”. A series will eliminate accumulated waste that poses as a burden on the colon and other organs including the liver, kidneys and lungs. It is easier for a colon to function efficiently after a colonic than it did before. Colonics encourage peristalsis, the natural rhythmic muscle contractions of the colon. The smooth muscle tissue becomes strengthened and toned, it is like exercise for your insides ! Most clients report that they are more “regular” after completing a few colon hydrotherapy treatments.
I have heard of taking probiotics for better digestion. Is this recommended?
YES - Good quality probiotics are very supportive in further restoring and maintaining that optimal bacterial balance in the digestive tract. To be absolutely certain that we are providing our clients with the most safe and effective care, our colon therapists dispense a few different high grade probiotic supplements at our clinic. Upon your first visit your therapist will make a recommendation for you based on the information gathered throughout your treatment. This product should be taken over the course of your series of colon hydrotherapy treatments. Each capsule delivers millions of micro organisms of friendly bacteria and are highly beneficial to take on a regular basis to promote overall health and to maintain your treatment results.
I hear that it can be highly beneficial to add probiotics, coffee or other therapeutic solutions to my treatment, is this available at your clinic ?
Yes, we can offer these as add-ons to your session. Your therapist can recommend which option would be best suited to your individual case if you would like. Please let us know ahead of time so that we can prepare the add-on for your treatment.
Is it true that colon hydrotherapy could do harm to my intestinal flora and valuable nutrients?
No, actually Quite the contrary. Having colonics is an opportunity to clear out old fermenting waste which can be the culprit of symptoms such as gas, bloating and even constipation or diarrhea. The truth is that washing out of fermenting waste in the large intestine, actually improves the environment for the good intestinal flora to thrive. Good bacteria can only breed in a clean environment that has been washed free of putrefaction and harmful bacteria. Each time you clean out the putrefying material a more favourable environment is created in your gut, Where good bacteria can multiply and valuable nutrients can be absorbed more easily resulting in more abundant health overall.
Can I have Colonics while I am having my Period ?
Yes. This is actually a natural time for the body to be cleansing and colon hydrotherapy will only enhance that process. If you are experiencing a lot of discomfort and cramping on the first couple days of your cycle then you may want to wait until that settles down, however, the series of colonics and regular detoxification practices may help to reduce those symptoms in the future. If you do have a colonic session while on your period, please wear the appropriate feminine products i.e.: a tampon or diva cup.
How many treatments will I need?
Our standard protocol is an initial series of 3 spaced no more than a week apart to properly hydrate and cleanse the colon. Some individuals with chronic constipation or other digestive issues may require more treatments in their initial series. Your nurse/ colon therapist will asses your case and create after care plan with you to meet your specific needs. This may include simple lifestyle hacks, small dietary changes, breath work, specific supplements and her recommended schedule for follow-up treatments. Follow-up care will help to maintain results and strengthen colon muscles. If the nurse suspects there is something underlying throwing your digestion off, she may also recommend that you look into further testing with your Naturopathic Doctor or your family doctor.

History of Colon Hydrotherapy:
Colon Hydrotherapy was used initially to treat fever and remove mucous. In fact, it was not uncommon for many European cultures to have an enema bag hanging on the back of the bathroom door which would be the first thing to get put to use if any member of the house hold made mention of feeling the slightest bit sick or had a runny nose.
The practice of various forms of "colon hydrotherapy" (water therapy of the colon) began as early as 1500 B.C. in Egypt and was documented as “Eber Papyrus” Ancient Greeks also used colonic irrigation for digestive disorders. Elie Mechinkoff, a Russian in 1908 received the Nobel Prize for research on immunity and the influence of bowel toxins on immunity.
In modern days, Dr. John H. Kellogg (inventor of Kellogg’s Corn Flakes and Rice Crispies) was a big proponent of colon hydrotherapy and eating lots of fiber especially contained in fruits and vegetables. He used colon therapy in his practice on thousands of patients in the place of gastrointestinal surgery.
Colon hydrotherapy reached the United States in the 1920s and ‘30s. During that time colonic irrigation machines were used in hospitals and doctors’ offices. Unfortunately as the pharmaceutical industry grew, natural treatments such as this one, became less utilized in the hospital setting, but now, once again doctors are turning to natural treatments as an adjunct to their protocols instead of prescription drugs.
